Step 3: Take a course in Swedish laws and regulations

Once you have received a decision from us that you have passed the proficiency test, the next step is to take a web course in Swedish laws and regulations. The course focuses on the laws and regulations to which the healthcare system is subject. The course is free of charge.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign up for the course in Swedish laws and regulations at Umeå University.
  2. Take the course full-time or part-time – you choose yourself.

Umeå University will notify you of the first available date to start the course.

More statutes you need to know

In the course you will learn about general statutes in Swedish health care. In order to have sufficient knowledge in your work, you also need to know about other statutes. During your clinical training, you will gain knowledge of important statutes for your profession. You can prepare for the training by reading these statutes:

Time limit for completing the course in Swedish laws and regulations at Umeå University
The National Board of Health and Welfare changes the organizer of the course in Swedish laws and regulations. The course in Swedish laws and regulations organized by Umeå University will end in 2024. For those who take the course or are about to start the course at Umeå University, the following dates apply:

  • You who have started the course in Swedish laws and regulations no later than May 15, 2024, need to finish the course no later than September 30, 2024.
  • You who start the course in Swedish laws and regulations on September 2, 2024, need to finish the course by December 2, 2024 at the latest.Swedish laws and regulations.
  • You who start the course in Swedish laws and regulations on 14 October 2024, need to finish the course by 14 January 2025 at the latest.

If you are studying the course now or if you are admitted to the course in autumn 2024, you will receive information on the course website at Umeå University about which dates apply to you.

Anyone who does not have time to pass the course in Swedish laws and regulations organized by Umeå University will be able to register again to take the course again with the new supplier. Procurement of a new supplier is ongoing and more information will be provided during the autumn term.

When can I take the course?

When you get a decision from the National Board of Health and Welfare that you have passed the proficiency test, you can apply to the web course in Swedish laws and regulations.

The course is suspended during the summer. Once you have registered for the course, Umeå University will notify you of the first available date to start the course. Admission takes place at regular intervals when there are vacancies. You can study the course full-time or part-time.

You can do your practical service before or after the course. You can also complete the course in parallel with the practical service, as long as you don't do it during working hours.

What happens if I do not pass?

You must pass the course in order to proceed. Contact the university for more information on what you need to do to be approved.
