Dental practitioner educated outside the EU and EEA

If you are a dental practitioner and have a certificate of specialist expertise from a non-EU or EEA country, you can obtain a certificate of specialist expertise in the same specialty in Sweden.

1. Basic requirements

In order to be able to apply for a Certificate of specialist expertise, you will need to have completed clinical training equivalent to two years of a dental internship and three years of dental specialty training in your country of education.

What if I don’t fulfil the requirements?

If you do not fulfil the requirements for a minimum of two years of a dental internship and three years of a dental specialty training, you will need to apply for a certificate of specialist expertise according to the same rules as dentists with a foundation education in Sweden. This means that you must complete a minimum of three years of dental specialty training before you can apply for a Certificate of specialist expertise.

2. Apply for a licence to practise

If you fulfil the requirements of step 1, you should apply for a Swedish licence to practice. You can not proceed to the next step until you have received your Swedish licence to practise as a dental practitioner.

3. Complete a supplemental dental specialty training (ST)

Once you have received your Swedish licence to practise, you must complete a minimum of one year of supplemental dental specialty training (ST) in Sweden.

Here’s how it’s done

  1. Contact a clinic that offers dental specialty training and apply for a place in a dental specialty training programme.
  2. Once you have received a place, the responsible internship supervisor makes an assessment of your education completed outside of Sweden and then develops an individual training plan for your Swedish dental specialty training.
  3. During your supplementary dental specialty training in Sweden, the internship supervisor assesses your knowledge, skills, and approach according to the description of learning objectives for the specialty that you are going to apply for.

You perform your dental specialty training for a minimum of a year.

4. Apply for a Certificate of specialist expertise

Once you have completed your dental specialty training, you apply for a Certificate of specialist expertise according to the same rules that apply to dentists educated in Sweden.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I credit transfer and be given credit for my internship/clinical training performed abroad?

If you have completed clinical training equivalent to two years of a dental internship and three years of a dental specialty training in a country outside the EU and EEA, you can contact a clinic that is carrying out specialty training, once you have received a Swedish licence to practise as a dental practitioner, and apply for a dental specialty training. It is the responsible internship supervisor at the clinic, who takes a position concerning the education or internship done abroad and clinical training in relation to the requirements of the description of learning objectives for the relevant specialist expertise. It is also primarily the internship supervisor who assesses whether, and if so what, that needs to be supplemented by Swedish dental specialty training in order to fulfil all the requirements of the description of learning objectives. An individual programme syllabus and training plan is then prepared for your specialty training in Sweden.

Can I do my specialty training (ST) on a part-time basis?

Yes. But if you do your specialty training part-time, the length of the clinical training is to be extended so that the total time corresponds to full-time work for a minimum of three years.
