Medical physicist

You will need to have a licence

If you would like to practice as a medical physicist in Sweden, you will need a Swedish licence. The title of medical physicist is protected by law. In other words, you may refer to yourself as a medical physicist only if you have a licence.

If you do not have a Swedish personal identity number, residence permit or address

You may obtain a licence even if you do not have a Swedish personal identity number, residence permit or address. In order to practice or go to school in Sweden, however, you will have to obtain a residence or work permit from the Swedish Migration Board, Migrationsverket.

If you have a licence in an EU or EEA country

If you were educated outside the EU and EEA, were awarded a licence in an EU or EEA country and practiced under that licence for at least three years, apply as if your education were in an EU or EEA country.

A brief look at licences
A licence is proof that a practitioner has the skills and qualifications that a profession requires. A total of 21 different healthcare professions demand licences in Sweden. To put it another way, those particular professions are regulated by law. A licence is permanent but may be revoked due to malpractice, gross incompetence or conviction for a serious criminal offence.

How to obtain a licence

Demonstrate what you know

If you want to apply for a Swedish licence, you must first take a series of steps to demonstrate that you possess the knowledge required to practice the profession. You must also know Swedish and be familiar with the laws and regulations to which the healthcare system is subject.

First take the steps, then apply

To obtain a licence you need to do the following:

Once you have completed all the steps, apply for a Swedish licence. The length of time it takes to complete the steps will vary according to your individual situation, but you can expedite the process by starting to study Swedish as soon as possible.

If your previous education does not meet Swedish qualifications, you can go to school

If you do not have a post-secondary degree or if your education is not equivalent to the system in Sweden, you can go to school to obtain a Swedish degree and then apply for a licence to practice your profession.

Go to universityadmissions.se and studera.nu to learn about application procedures and admission requirements. If you were previously educated for or practiced a profession, the college or university that admits you may determine that you can expedite your studies.

Assessing your education

Assessing your education Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 02/10/2016 - 16:28

The first step is to have your education assessed

The first step towards obtaining a licence is for us to assess the education you received abroad. We will determine whether the level, length and content of your education are equivalent to the Swedish system. You will receive a decision explaining whether you can proceed and how to take the next step.

Obtaining an assessment of your education is free of charge. You do not need to know Swedish or have a Swedish personal identity number, residence permit or address.

This is what to do

You will need to submit an application if you would like your education to be assessed. Fill out an application form and send it to us along with several required documents. Do not send your original documents. If we need to assess the original documents, we will notify you.

Submit your application

The application must contain

Please also send copies of the following documents, in both the original language and translated:

After entering your application in our system, we will send a confirmation to any email address you have provided. Confirmation is sent via e-mail only.

Application form for assessment of education abroad

Each document must be in both the original language and a Swedish or English translation

Each document must be in both the original language and a Swedish or English translation
Make sure that you submit each document in the original language, as well as a Swedish or English translation. You must use an authorised translator. The translation can be made in any country. You do not have to translate your passport.

If you do not have all the documents

If the situation in your country of education does not allow you to get the documents needed for your application you can still apply. If that is the case, you should submit the documents you have and an explanation why you cannot submit all the required documents.

If you do not have a graduate certificate or diploma, contact the Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitets- och högskolerådet, UHR) and apply for a so-called Background Paper. Once you have this, please enclose it with your application to us.

Post your application

Take a proficiency test

Take a proficiency test Sanna Jurelius Wed, 06/07/2017 - 15:18

A proficiency test shows what you know and have learned

Once your education has been assessed, the next step is to take a proficiency test. The test will determine whether your proficiency meets the requirements for successfully completing the remaining steps. The test is administered in Swedish and you will have to know Swedish in order to pass the test.

How the test works

University of Gothenburg arranges the test on our behalf and sends the results to us. The test contains a theoretical part and a practical part. You have to pass the theoretical part before you can do the practical part. You will have up to three attempts to pass the theoretical part and three attempts to pass the practical one. If you do not pass the test on your first attempt you will from that day on have a time limit of five years to pass it. If you have passed the theoretical part, but have not passed the practical part yet, the five years limit starts counting on July 1, 2019.

For more information on dates and registration go to the University of Gothenburg's website.

Undergo clinical training

Undergo clinical training Sanna Jurelius Wed, 06/07/2017 - 15:21

Demonstrate your practical knowledge and skills

Once you have received a decision from us that you have passed the proficiency test, the next step is to complete your clinical training and take a course in Swedish laws and regulations. You must wait for our decision before you start. The training period is your opportunity to demonstrate your practical knowledge and skills while seeing how the Swedish healthcare system works.

You will need to undergo clinical training even if you have practised your profession before. Previous experience does not entitle you to a shorter period of clinical training.

New content in the clinical training

More information about the clinical training will follow.
